Lance Corporal Dewberry was a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. On July 5, 1968, he was killed by the enemy while on patrol in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

Lance Corporal Jerry D. Dewberry was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines in Vietam. On July 5, 1968, just five days short of his twentieth birthday, Dewberry was part of a Marine unit sent on patrol inQuang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

During the patrol, the unit came under enemy fire and Dewberry was hit. He was apparently believed to be dead and left behind. Dewberry was officially listed Killed in Action/Body Not Recovered.
