Phillip Walden Talburt, 23, and his sister, Retha Ann Carstensen, 20, both of Winchester, were killed Monday at 5:15 p.m. when the motorcycle they were riding was truck by a car on Interstate 5, about a mile north of the Yoncalla Junction.
State police said the operator of the 1970 model car involved in the accident was Joseph Bernard Tucker, 20, of Portland, on leave from the navy. A passenger with him was listed a Donnette Jean Clark, 20, of Talent. They were taken by ambulance to Douglas Community Hospital for a checkup, but were released.
Police said the southbound car, operated by Tucker and registered to Robert W. Clark of Talent, veered off the highway with the left tires in the median strip while the occupants were looking at sheep on the west side of the highway.
The vehicle traveled 285 feet on the shoulder in an attempt to regain the southbound lanes. After entering the southbound lane, the car traveled 111 feet before braking. It slid in the southbound lanes for 194 feet, across 100 feet of turf median, then across the northbound lanes and struck the motorcycle in the outside northbound lane.
Both passengers on the motorcycle were knocked off and killed instantly, the police report said. County Medical Examiner Dr. James K. Gray pronounced the brother and sister dead. The bodies were taken to Long & Shukle Memorial Chapel.
Mrs. Carstensen was the wife of Gary Carstensen.
