Funeral services for Cecil Godwin, 88, of Old Tabernacle Community were at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 at Old Tabernacle United Methodist Church with the Revs. Fred Hollis, Lee Jones, Chris Lasseter and Dan Raley officiating.Burial followed in the church cemetery with Providence Funeral Home directing.Memorials may be made to Wiregrass Hospice, 1800 Hwy. 84 W, Opp, AL 36467; Old Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 11592 Hwy. 51, New Brockton, AL 36351.Mr. Godwin passed away, Tuesday, Jan. 22, at his home.He served his country in World War II from Jan. 14, 1942 to Aug. 21, 1945. He was a telephone operator with Headquarters Company, 26th Field Artillery, 9th Division Unit. He was stationed in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, and Germany.His decorations and citations were Bronze Star Medal, Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Silver Star and three Bronze Stars.After Mr. Godwin was honorably discharged from the Army, he hitch hiked back to the intersection of Hwy. 231 and Hwy. 51 and then walked to his Uncle Lonnie Godwin's house and was greeted by his Uncle's squirrel dog, Branger.Survivors include his wife, Earlean Stevens Godwin of Old Tabernacle Community; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cecilia Raley (Dan) of Slocomb, Gayla Hollis (Jerry) of Enterprise and Nelda Bailey (Dave) of New Hope Community; one son and daughter-in-law, Joe Godwin (Patti) of Dothan; one sister, Wynelle Lasseter of Mixon Cross Road Community; nine grandchildren, Braxton Raley of LaGrange, Ga., Brittany Berry of Slocomb, Brantley Raley of Adana, Turkey, Chelsey Hanson and Heath Hollis, both of Enterprise, Whitney Bailey and Ashley Bailey, both of New Hope Community, Dajun Godwin and Rowan Godwin, both of Dothan; and six great-grandchildren, Trenton Berry and Tanner Berry, both of Slocomb, Savannah Raley and Salinger Raley, both of Adana, Logan Raley of LaGrange, and Kristian Prettyman of New Hope Community.
