Blanche "Maxine" Alderson died Friday, June 19, 2009, at her home with her loving family at her side, after a long battle with cancer. She was born on July 3, 1922, in Trenton, New Jersey, the daughter of the late Maxwell and Blanche Dunn-Giedlin.

Maxine attended high school in Trenton and graduated from Jersey City Medical Center School of Nursing in 1943. Her working career in nursing included general duty and supervisor work at Doctor's Hospital in New York City and at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Hollywood, California, a private duty nursing in Trenton, New Jersey, a industrial nursing at the Ternstedt Plant of General Motors in Detroit, Michigan, at L.A. Young Spring and Wire Co. of Trenton, New Jerset and at the U.S. Naval Turbine Test Station in Trenton, where she set up and operated the Dispensary and Audiometric Testing Facility. She also worked as a doctor's office nurse in New Jersey.

Maxine did volunteer work with the Children's Dental Clinic in Paoli, Pennsylvania, for five years. Her most recent work was as medical secretary with Visiting Nurse Services Association in Schenectady, New York. Mrs. Alderson held registered nursing licenses in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, Michigan and Ohio.

She had a lifelong interest in music, the visual arts and the performing arts. An accomplished pianist, she enjoyed playing classical music, light opera, musical comedy and jazz. She had copyrighted two original piano compositions.

Maxine enjoyed knitting for her family and also donated many knitted doll clothes, winter hats, and caps for premature babies to charitable groups and church bazaars. She was a charter member of the Academy for Learning in Retirement (ALR) in Saratoga Springs, where she co-led a course on medical ethics.

She also took drawing and painting classes and several of her sketches were published in the ALR journal The Apple Tree.

Maxine was the loving wife of 52 years to her husband, Edgar (Ted) Alderson.

She is also survived by two daughters, Barbara (Daniel) Lang of Cary, North Carolina and Nan Alderson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and one grandson, Jordan Lang.

Maxine was predeceased by two sisters, Rose Yvonne Blumel and Margaret Giedlin and four brothers, Arthur, James, Thomas and Joseph Giedlin.

Arrangements provided by the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, 2034 West Street, Galway. There were no calling hours.

A memorial service was held at 10 a.m., Monday, June 29, 2009 at the Galway United Methodist Church in Galway.

Contributions in her memory were made to the American Cancer Society , 260 Osborn Road, Albany, New York 12211, Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, New York 12866 and any other charity.
