Leo Grafton (Red) Monaghan, 87, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away on March 29, 2012, in his home. He was born on February 6, 1925, to Fred and Violet Monaghan in Charles City, Iowa, the sixth of nine children.

He married Marian Schlader on September 16, 1950. They lived in Charles City, Iowa, until they moved to Springfield, Missouri, in April 1970.

Red was drafted into the Army 8th Air Force in 1943. He served in the 492nd "Carpetbaggers" Bomber Group in England through 1945. Upon returning to Charles City, Iowa, he and three of his brothers formed Monaghan Brothers farming where he worked until 1970. From 1970 he worked as a real estate broker until his retirement. He served on the Springfield Airport and Council of Churches boards. After his retirement Red developed a passion for wood working and collecting various tools and supplies for his hobby. He gave many of his wood working creations to his children, grandchildren and many charities.

He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; one daughter, Monica; seven sons, Greg (Sue), Jeff, Rich, Kevin, Brian (Lisa), Kelly (Chris), David (Jenni); one sister, Doris Meurer of Indianapolis, Indiana; twenty grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 2, 2012 in Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.

Visitation with the family will be held Sunday, April 1, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to The Kitchen, Holy Trinity, or a charity of your choice .
