CANASTOTA >> Mary L. Ackerman, 89, formerly of 8528 N. Main St., died Monday, Oct. 20, 2014, in the Chittenango Center, where she had been a resident for nearly three years.Born in Canastota, on May 16, 1925, she was the daughter of William and Lottie Suits-Drum Walters. A lifelong resident of the area, Mary was a graduate of Stockbridge Valley High School. She married Edward ""Jack"" Ackerman in Whitelaw on April 26, 1946. Jack died on Aug. 20, 1990.Prior to her retirement, Mary was the property manager of the former Morones Pharmacy and Real Estate Properties. She was a member of the Whitelaw Presbyterian Church.Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Rob Cunningham of Syracuse; her son, William E. Ackerman of Angier, N.C.; her grandchildren, Bret and Johanna Sgroi, Bart and Amanda Sgroi, Shay Marie Sgroi and William J. Ackerman; her two great-grandchildren, Rosario Sgroi and Isabella Sgroi; and many nieces and nephews, as well as caregivers. Funeral services will be held Monday, at the convenience of the family from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 300 S. Peterboro St., Canastota, with the Rev. Donna Chapman, officiating. Interment will be made in Whitelaw Cemetery. There are no public hours of visitation. Contributions, in her memory, may be made to Chittenango Center Residents' Activities Fund, 331 Russell St., Chittenango, N.Y. 13037.
