William Howard Gurvich, who as District Attorney Jim Garrison's chief investigator in the late 1960s looked into allegations that New Orleans businessman Clay Shaw conspired to assassinate President John F. Kennedy, died Thursday at St. Tammany Parish General Hospital in Covington of a heart attack. He was 65.

Mr. Gurvich was president of William Gurvich and Associates, a security firm.
After leading the probe of Shaw in 1967, Mr. Gurvich became disenchanted with the investigation and worked to clear Shaw's name, eventually resigning from Garrison's staff. He testified to the invalidity of the allegations before grand juries and in a related trial. Shaw was acquitted in March 1969.

Mr. Gurvich was born in Jacksonville, Fla., and lived in New Orleans for many years before moving to Covington in 1979. He was a member of the Republican National Committee and was a reserve colonel with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. He was a member of British Detectives, New York State Licensed Detectives, the Awards Committee for Louisiana Police Officers' Association, the Municipal Police Officers' Association of Louisiana, the Louisiana Chiefs of Police, Louisiana Sheriffs' Association, National Rifle Association, New Orleans Athletic Association, Propeller Club, Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Foundation, the PRCA-PRO Rodeo Cowboy Association, Quarter Horse Association, Calf Ropers' Association, and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Jean Bankhead Dunham Gurvich, and three sons, Wayne Gurvich (1952-1997), Stephen Gurvich and William Gurvich Jr.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery
