Hubert "Tommy" Thomas was born along with his twin brother Hunley on May 3, 1906 in Hotchkiss, Colorado. He was enrolled in the Staunton Military Acedemy in Staunton, VA around 1919. After leaving Staunton, he graduated from high school in Paonia, Colorado in 1922 and went on to earn a college degree in electrical engineering. Hubert worked for RCA in the 1930s and enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in the early 1940s. After completing Officer Training he was commissioned as an officer, serving in WWII and after the war became a career officer. While a Lieutenant in the USNR in Hawaii, Hubert married Madeleine Hayden during wartime on August 1, 1942. Hubert and Maddie moved several times during his career, including tours of duty at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Washington, D.C., and Fort Monmouth, New Jersey and the Pentagon, in Washington, D.C. Hubert retired in 1961 as a Navy Captain; shortly after his retirement they moved the family to Ojai, California.

In the years of their retirement, Hubert and Maddie traveled extensively on golf and art painting tours, and also traveled through Central America by car. Hubert and Maddie spent several years in California until their children finished college. They then moved back to Hawaii but maintained a second residence in Canyon Lake, California. Hubert and Maddie relocated to Air Force Village West in 1989.
