Tribute to Aunt Sophie by Mary Jo
"Soso" loved to dance, read all kinds of books, traveling with her family and friends, and of course - Hershey Chocolate! Mom, Soso and I are "The Girls" and always will be. Being the child between two strong women taught me many things and brought with it many challenges. The bond between a mother and a daughter is so strong. But the bond between and aunt and her niece is just as strong in another way. Soso was my playmate, my protector, my best cheerleader, my buddy, and my best friend. She taught me the love of music (all kinds), to dance, dress up, and to pretend. It is important to pretend to get through the tough times of life. She taught me the love of reading, although our taste in books was different. She never could understand how I loved to read those crime murder mysteries when she loved to read those romance novels. She also introduced me to her love of New York, movies, and fashion, and of course - jewelry, especially jewelry! She fed my fetishes with purchases of new pieces all the time.
Through my life I have many memories of things that will always remind me of Soso: hats, jewelry, New York, fashion, books, Jackie Gleason LP's, M&M's and Dr. Pepper, Joan Rivers jewelry, countless authors, St. Lucy, caution of prednisone, Hershey chocolate bars, perfume, talking on the phone late at night with your best friend, a heart so big and willingness to always make the other person happy regardless of your sacrifice, itching, and love. The list goes on and so will my memories. I made her promise to talk to me in my dreams and to watch over me. She regretted that she could not see me marry, so did I, but maybe someday that will happen and I know she will be able to watch.
Soso's horoscope for Sunday was very appropriate. It read: "You'll get the best start anyone could hope for if you decide where you want to go. People with health problems will experience a turnaround. If you wish to lose a bad habit or being a good one, make it come true now".
Please say a prayer for Soso and especially ask St. Lucy, St. Joseph, St. Anthony, and St. Jude to help her settle in. She prayed to them everyday.
