Chico Daily Record, Monday, December 15, 1902, pg 1 col 1: Laura M’Glashan Commits Suicide. Well Known Lady Resident of Biggs Drowned Herself in a Pond Within the Town’s Limits. Her Rash Act Due to Long Suffering From Nervous Prostration – Was at One Time a Well Known Teacher in Butte County Schools.

The citizens of Biggs were shocked to a degree of horror as the news passed from lip to ear that the body of Miss Laura McGlashan had been found in a pond of water near the public school building, about 7 o’clock Sunday morning, cold in death.

Miss McGlashan had been ill during the last three or four months, and was under treatment for nervous prostration. She moved recently from her own dwelling to that of her sister, Mrs. W.M. Harrison, situate in the same block, in order that she might be constantly under the tender care of her relatives.

She spoke to her brother-in-law Saturday night about 10 o’clock, but her absence from the house was not discovered until early Sunday morning, when search was begun. Wallace Simmons, nephew of deceased by marriage, accompanied by James Watson, after searching about the residence portion of town where they thought she might have gone, finally proceeded to the railroad a block distant from her residence, thence followed the track to the grain warehouse, a distance of about six blocks, but failing to locate her, diverted their return course to pass by the pond known as the brick-kiln pond, one passing each side. Mr. Watson came upon a small red blanket and a cape lying on the bank and called Mr. Simmons, and there in about three feet depth of water the body was found and from there taken to the undertaking parlors of H.S. Brink.

Coroner Bullington was notified and on his arrival from Oroville at 2 p.m., a jury consisting of A.M. Woodruff, E.D. Smith, Charles Bayles, J.R. Lewis, M.T. Ivy, J.M. Hastings, E.H. Grein, W.H. Dunahoo and Dr. G.J. Lucas were sworn and an inquest was held.

James Watson testified to the finding of the body and facts above stated.

W.M. Harrison stated in his evidence that the name of deceased was Laura K. McGlashan. She was born in New York about 46 or 47 years ago. She had been suffering with nervous prostration three of four months. She was a sister to the wife of witness. Her health had been in about the same condition during the past few days and she was able to get up to her meals.

The jury rendered a verdict that the death of deceased was caused by drowning with suicidal intent while suffering from nervous prostration.

Miss McGlashan was a former teacher in the Biggs public schools and a lady well known and highly respected in the community where she made her home.
