Jon "Jack" Douglas died in his sleep at his home in Bel Air on July 27. He was 73. Born September 10, 1936, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the only child of Dortha and Gordon Douglas, Jon Douglas moved with his family to Santa Monica, California, in 1944. He attended Santa Monica High School, where he played football, tennis and basketball. In 1958, he was graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, where he was quarterback on the football team and the school's first All-American in tennis. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years. In 1961 and 1962, Douglas represented the United States on the Davis Cup Tennis team, his most memorable win coming in '61 against the legendary Italian, Fausto Gardini, in front of a crazed partisan crowd in Rome. In 1971, he co-founded Jon Douglas Company Realtors with Dan Emmett and opened an office on San Vicente Boulevard in Brentwood. With a carefully cultivated upscale image, reflected in its classic-mansion logo and underscored by the words The Sign of Respect, the company became the preeminent luxury residential real estate firm in Greater Los Angeles. In 1995, Jon Douglas Company merged with Prudential as Prudential Jon Douglas Company, with offices in all key high-end California cities. The firm was acquired by Coldwell Banker in September 1997. By that time it had nearly 70 offices and 2,500 sales associates. Jon A. Douglas is survived by his four sons and six grandchildren: Mark, his wife, Joan, and their children, Matthew, Lauren and Caroline; Brad, his wife, Courtney, and their children, Wylie and Campbell; Jon Jr. and his son, Payton; and James (son of Martha Hunt). Additionally, Douglas is survived by his former spouse, Sue Ellen Douglas, the mother of his first three children.
