When Fred's mother Sarah died in 1875 and his father remarried before the year was out, Fred and his brother Frank left Chicago in 1876 and was in Houston, Texas with their aunt, Margaret (Scofield) Clarkson.
Fred was in Arizona Territory by 1880 and was associated with Wyatt Earp ((1848-1929) in various mining ventures in Colorado and California.
Fred Newton Scofield married (1) in Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona 5 October 1885 to Gertrude "Fanny" Krieger. They were divorced in Tombstone, Cochise, Arizona Territory January 1887.
Attracted to San Joaquin County, California because two uncles, Franklin and Herbert Scofield were in the valley, Fred headed the East Puente & Eagle Creek oil companies. He developed the Kern River, McKittrick & Midway oil fields.
Fred Scofield married (2) Margaret "Maggie" Fogal (1870-1955) in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona Territory, 3 February 1895.
Fred was cremated upon his death and was buried with his wife at the time of her death.
