Roosevelt C. Early, 72, of Crossett died Sunday, February 26, 2006, at Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. A native of West Helena and a resident of Crossett for the past 48 years, he was the principal of Crossett High School, a member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and an U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He received his elementary and secondary education in the West Helena School District and attended AM&N College (University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff), where he played football and sang in the choir. He received a bachelor's degree from AM&N and his master's degree from the University of Central Arkansas. He did additional studies at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro and earned administrative hours at Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe, LA. In 1958, he moved to Crossett and began teaching industrial arts at T. W. Daniel High School. After a short teaching career, he became assistant principal at T. W. Daniel Middle School, and later became principal at T. W. Daniel High School, Norman Junior High and was principal at Crossett High School until his death. He was employed by the Crossett School District for 48 years.


He served as chairman of the deacon board at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, chairman of the trustee board and served with the church brotherhood. He was the director of the E. C. Crossett Community Center, president of the UAPB Ashley County Alumni Association and participated in the Ashley County Medical Center board of directors, Ashley County Martin Luther King Planning Commission, Phi Delta Kappa Educational Society, Georgia-Pacific Planning Commission, the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators, the Arkansas Association of Secondary Principals, Crossett Classroom Teachers Association, Arkansas Education Association and the National Education Association.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Lendora Taylor Early; two daughters, Cassandra Early and husband Steven Green of Little Rock and Patricia Early of Detroit, MI; one brother, David Early of West Helena; three sisters, Thelma Franklin, Iola Redmond and Alma Taper and husband Louis, all of West Helena; and two grandchildren, Kenyellshia Early and Chase Morgan Green.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 4, at 1 p.m. at the Crossett Auditorium with Rev. B. J. Jackson and Elder R. E. Matheney officiating. Burial was at Westview Cemetery under the direction of Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg. Deacons of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church serving as deacons were James Dawkins, Thomas Lowe Sr., Ricky Simms, Earl Hardaway, James Phifer and Albert Goodwin. Honorary pallbearers were the faculty of Crossett High School and the Crossett School District, and the Third Jurisdiction Arkansas State Church of God in Christ.
