Dr. Gray was not only a surgeon in private practice but also served in the Union Army as a surgeon and Major in Iowa Infantry and in the 3rd Iowa Cavalry. He m. Juliette Stevens 8 Oct 1855 after graduation from the College of physicians and surgeons at Koekuk, Iowa in 1854.His father, Daniel Gray, b. 1790 Maine, founded Grayville, Washington Township, Monroe County, OH and died on 1 October 1852 of fever while checking on some work in Napolean, Arkansas. He is buried there probably, as James went to Napolean to work with him and learned the news that he had died a month and a half prior to James' arrival.
