In 1925 the detective and another officer were driving through the intersection of 39th Street and Lake Park Avenue when they were broadsided by a limousine being driven by a drunk driver. Detective Mescall was 39-years-old when he passed away. Detective Mescall was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Loretto. James Mescall was the son of Patrick and Kate (Brooks) Mescall, both born in County Clare, Ireland.
