She was born in Wedowee, AL. She is the Daughter of Rev. John Pierce West, Sr. and Doris Maxwell West. She was the wife of the James Shelton McKay, Sr. and together they lived in Guin with a large garden. Her relatives loved to come visit and eat fresh vegetables prepared with great love and play with the beagles that lived under the shed. She was a life long member of the Philadelphia United Methodist Church. She was actively involved in United Methodist Women, and was known for her "card ministry" using many rolls of stamps to offer congratulations or sympathy to friends and relatives. She worked as a secretary at the Guin Elementary School and was always ready to listen to the children's problems and help them with a hug or a band aid. She made sure no school child went hungry.
She was survived by two daughters, Anne McKay Odom of Tuscaloosa and Jane McKay Spooner of Guin. She was also survived by two Sons, James S. McKay Jr. of Culowhee, NC and David E. McKay of Jacksonville, FL. She left 7 grandchildren, Merry Spooner Kuchle, April Odom Hargraves, Dallas McKay, James Odom, Miranda McKay, Patric Spooner and Victoria Spooner. She also left two great grandchildren, Will Kuchle and Nicole Kuncle. She left two Sisters, Frances West Reeves of Hueytown and Rachel West Shelton of Knoxville, and a brother Rev. John Pierce "Pete" West, Jr. of Childersburg. She was also preceded in death by a Brother Charles West and a Sister Mary West Erwin.
Services were held Monday, March 13, 2006 at the Philadelphia United Methodist Church with burial in the cemetery adjoining. Rev. Shane Harris and Rev. Stephen P. West, her nephew, officiated.
