Esmond was bright, good looking, had a winning personality and was a wonderful young man with a bright future ahead of him. Esmond was a great athlete and would have had a good chance to play professional baseball if he hadn't had to work in high school and college with no time to play so that he could earn enough to put himself through college. He was 23 years old, had just graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in veterinary medicine, married the girl of his dreams and had his whole life ahead of him when he was killed. Esmond was drowned in a freak car accident in the John Day River in Oregon.
He died before I was born but I often think how different all of our lives might have been if he had not been killed, but had been able to live, and be a positive influence in our family.
My grandmother Jessie, said he might have played pro baseball but had to work in high school and college with no time to play.
3-07 Death Certificate: Name: Smith, Esmond, County: Grant, Death Date: 1 May 1937, Certificate: 23, Spouse: Luella. He died in Orgeon - drowned in the John Day river in a car accident.
On line it says his death date is May 1,1937 but I have April 30. My mother, Josephine Matilda Smith, wrote in her diary the day they went to the RR station. She writes "What a sad, unbearable day. We got up early and went to the station to claim Esmonds body."
