MY MOM
by Judy Calhoun Bresch (daughter)
Born on April 25 1920, in Sunnyside Yakima County, WA. Daughter of Verne E Smith and Jessie L Shaffner, Smith. My mother died on Oct 31 in Puyallup, WA from Hodgkins Disease at age 31, leaving two daughters age 11 and 9. She is buried in Woodbine Cemetery, Puyallup, WA.
Those are the cold hard facts, but have nothing to do with the person I call my mother.
Jo was My mommie and to me she was everything. She was smart, easy going, she could get along with anyone, she was very laid back, she had an amazing sense of humor, was very pretty, a terrific mom, and everyone loved Jo. Some of my best memories are of us going to 'the show," eating Chinese food, and laughing, a lot. There was a radio show that asked a daily question and gave away jars of pickles if you called and knew the answer. As I said, Jo was smart and she always knew the right answer. But you could only call in once a day. So she would call 4 or 5 times and give different neighbors address's. We always had lots of pickles around the house.
The trouble with Jo was that she married the wrong man, my dad. Al was quite a guy! He was an "individual" He drank, cussed, drove too fast, and had his own ideas and ways of doing things. But he got by on his charm and good looks. Marrying Al made her life harder than it needed to be. After they divorced she had to work full time and we had to move and we never had any money. Jo was always at work and so my sister and I pretty much raised ourselves. Jo was a great mom a good and kind person and not a day has gone by since 1951 that I haven't missed her. When a childs' mother dies, it leaves a permanent hole in their heart.

They shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We shall remember them.
For those who die young are young forever.
