(Betty Lurene Carson Shilling Shinn)

Ashley Lurene Alexandria, 75, passed away September 4, 2014, at Wyoming Springs Assisted Living and Memory Care in Round Rock, Texas. Family, friends, and acquaintances will long remember Ashley for her quick wit and fun personality.

Ashley was born in Phoenix, Arizona, on November 2, 1938. Her birth name was Betty Lurene Carson. She was the third of four children born to Gladys and Edgar Carson. Betty graduated from high school in Phoenix but moved to Knoxville, Iowa after marrying Gary Shilling. She and Gary had two beautiful children, Cory and Rhonda. They all enjoyed growing up on the Shilling farm until the union dissolved. Later, Betty married Ben Shinn Jr. of Knoxville and added a baby girl, Terees, to the family. The marriage was subsequently dissolved, and Betty moved to Ankeny, Iowa.

Looking for an adventure, Betty enlisted in the Navy Reserves. Betty was never one to sit idle. After her honorable discharge from the Navy Reserves and ready for her next adventure, Betty enrolled in barber school. This is where she finally found her calling. After barber school, Betty changed her name to Ashley Alexandria, packed up all her belongings, and headed south on IH35 to Texas. After a brief visit to Dallas, she decided it was too busy. Further south on IH35, she decided Waco was not busy enough. Then, she found and fell in love with Austin, Texas. Ashley worked for two years at the Tarrytown Barber Shop before she bought out old-time barbers George Fuller and John Burk, who had owned the barbershop for 32 years. Ashley's customers became her extended family. They ranged from young boys to old men. She once said cutting little boys' hair is 'like trying to hit a hair on a snake.'

After declining health due to Parkinson's Disease, Ashley closed the barbershop in December 2010. Ashley had always dreamed of traveling after her retirement, but her disease had progressed too far. Fortunately, she was able to take a few trips before she retired. She particularly enjoyed her trip to Germany with her son Cory, her trip to Scotland and England with her daughter Rhonda, and of course, Disney World with her daughter Terees and her family.

In December 2012, Ashley moved into Wyoming Springs Assisted Living and Memory Care. Although she resisted the idea of assisted living at first, she soon made many new friends and was surrounded by a loving and caring staff. Ashley's adaptation to assisted living was made easier by the facility's newly adopted dog, Wyoming. Wyoming and Ashley instantly bonded, and you rarely saw one without the other. As Ashley's health further declined, Wyoming stayed loyally by her side. The family thanks the staff at Wyoming Springs Assisted Living and Memory Care and Gentiva Hospice for the compassion and care given to Ashley.

Ashley is preceded in death by her parents, her son Cory Shilling, granddaughter Chrystie Norton, brother William Carson, and infant sister Barbara Ann Carson.

She is survived by her daughter Rhonda Shilling Chambers of Knoxville, Iowa, daughter Terees Shinn-Jenkins (and husband Kenny) of Austin, Texas, brother Jim Carson (and wife Karin) of Edmonds, Washington, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at Wyoming Springs Assisted Living and Memory Care in Round Rock, Texas. Ashley's wishes were to be cremated and to have her cremated remains interred next to her son Cory at the Gosport Cemetery in Knoxville, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Texas Humane Heroes, formerly known as the Humane Society of Williamson County, at www.TexasHumaneHeroes.org/donate.
