COURIER JOURNAL OBITUARY - 03/07/2006
McGARY - Mary Jo, of Louisville, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 6, 2006. She was surrounded by her grandchildren at Oaklawn Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at the time of her passing. Like many of our country's "Greatest Generation," Mary Jo defied the odds living two days past her 96th birthday. Mary Jo Winstead was born in Sebree, KY. She met the love of her life, Phillip M. McGary in 1930, while attending Louisville Normal School. The two married a year later to the day. She considered her loving relationship with Phil, her family and her devotion to Christ among her crowning achievements. Mrs. McGary was also proud to hold a bachelor's degree from Nazareth and master's degree from the University of Louisville. She was retired from the Jefferson County Board of Education with 31 years of service. Mary Jo taught school for 16 years, served as principal for seven years, and was supervisor of teachers for eight years. She was active in the Jefferson County Teachers Association, holding various leadership positions. Cane Run, Kennedy, and Hawthorne were among the schools she served. When Mary Jo was not too busy teaching for Jefferson County she taught Sunday school and volunteered with the Women's Auxilliary at Baptist Hospital East. Her more than 72 years of teaching Sunday school were chronicled in a 1998 Courier-Journal article titled "Morning Glory." She was a member of Hurstbourne Baptist Church. Mary Jo was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip M. McGary; her daughter, Dr. Betty Jo Winstead McGary; and her son, Phillip Winstead McGary. She is survived by her grandchildren, Memerie McGary, Kellie Waterhouse, Tracey Lyon, Alyson Griffith, Robin Bilinski, Thomas Pearce and Andrew Pearce; ten great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at her church, 8800 Shelbyville Rd., with burial in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd.
