Social Reformer, Actress. A native of New York City she graduated with honors from Middlebury College before venturing to California to pursue an acting career. She made appearances on television's "Law and Order" and "All My Children" and hosted a talk show on the Lifetime Network. She performed on Broadway as well as regional theaters around the country. In 1992 she married actor Christopher Reeve. Three years later her husband was paralyzed in a horse riding accident. She became a tireless advocate in the search for a cure to paralysis and at her husband's death on October 10, 2004 she assumed the position of chairperson of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation. At the time of her death over sixty–two million dollars had been given by the foundation for research and quality of life grants. She spent the last years of her life as an activist for the rights of the disabled. Although neither she nor her husband ever smoked she was stricken by lung cancer.
