Katherine U. Monaghan, affectionately called both Katie and Bessie by her family, was a daughter of James Monaghan and Martha Scott Neil. She was married to Fredrick J. Bergmann on 20 August 1903:
Gillespie Couple Married Here. Thursday evening at 7:30 Mr. Mr. Fred Bergman, a prominent and popular young gentleman, and Miss Katherine Monaghan, a lovely young lady, both of Gillespie, were married in this city by Rev. Fr. Hencey, of the Cathedral. The wedding party included Mrs. James Monaghan, mother, and Mr. William Monaghan, brother of the bride, and Mrs. Peter and Miss Eula Niel, of Bunker Hill.
Both of the contracting parties have many friends in Alton as well as in their hometown, who will wish them a long and happy voyage on the matrimonial sea. The bride is a niece of William Monaghan of the Monaghan Hotel at Second and Shields streets, and the wedding party is being entertained there. The happy young couple will leave this evening for a bridal trip. Source: Alton Evening Telegraph, Fri. 21 Aug 1903, p.3.
