He was an outstanding baseball player at Taunton High School and later at Providence College.
In January 1942 Richard left Providence College and joined the Army. The Boston Red Sox signed him at that time. He received a medical discharge from the Army in 1945. Major League Baseball awarded him a lifetime pass to any major league ballpark.
Mr. Mahoney taught in the Somerset School system for 51 years. He was both Vice Principal and Athletic Director. He received a master's degree from Boston University. He took great pride in his student athletes. He had been President of the National Association of Basketball Officials of Massachusetts.
Richard retired 1987 and moved to Old Silver Beach. He was active in St. Elizabeth Seton Parish and past president of Old Silver Beach Association. He enjoyed reading, shell fishing and restoring antiques.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Dan Mahoney of N. Dighton, Mary Wilusz of Dighton and Michael Mahoney of E. Falmouth; and 6 grandchildren.
Visiting hours from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, February 20th in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main St, FALMOUTH CENTER. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 481 Quaker Rd, N. Falmouth. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Taunton.
