He enlisted in the Army on August 6, 1940, prior to the war, at Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, California. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in a machine shop and also as Single, without dependents.

William was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 was shot down and crashed in France during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
