After travelling widely in Europe he devoted his zeal to the history and antiquities of Wiltshire, listing in his chronicles the position and contents of hundreds of barrows. One of his main works is an "everything-you-want-to-know" 'History of Modern Wiltshire' (1822 to 1844) in six volumes, besides travel books on Elba, Italy and Sicily. He also wrote a description of the house and gardens of Stourhead, which his grandfather had planned and built.
