Mary A. Southerland Hunnicutt passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 26, 2006, at Good Shepherd Medical Center, after several months of ill health. She was born October 6, 1921, in Batesville, Arkansas, the daughter of Charley and "Dugan" Southerland. After her mother's death, she was reared by an uncle and aunt, Warren and Ruth Teague of Arkadelphia, Arkansas. They preceded her in death, as did her oldest sister, Opal; and brothers, Charles "Bill" and Robert Southerland. Surviving Mrs. Hunnicutt is one remaining sibling, her sister, Roxie Courvelle; her husband of 63 years, Edward D. Hunnicutt; two daughters and their husbands, Rose Anne and Floyd Hill of Baytown, and Linda and Raymond Giles of Longview; three grandchildren, Todd K. Hill of Baytown, Scott C. Hill and wife, Angelica, of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, and Cami Cardinale of North Hollywood, California; seven great-grandchildren, Scott C. Jr., Ashlie, Brandon, Alannah, Joshua, Jordan, and Isaac Hill. Mrs. Hunnicutt was a devoted Christian wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she particularly loved their Sunday school class, the "Happy Givers." She was respected as a hard worker at Stemco for 26 years. She had a great compassion for the poor, and particularly anyone struggling or in need. The HiWay 80 Rescue Mission and the church food pantry were dear to her heart. Earlier in her life, she taught Sunday school and was a helpmate to her husband, a deacon, as he led music in small Baptist churches in Arkansas and Texas. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, March 3, 2006, at the Lakeview Mausoleum Chapel. The message will be delivered by Brother Bill Bruton. The family will receive friends for visitation 6-8 p.m. this evening, March 2, 2006, at Welch Funeral Home, 4619 Judson Road. The family would like to thank Dr. Rodney Slone and staff, the staff of Good Shepherd orthopedic floor and the emergency room, and Clairmont Nursing Home for the kindness given during Mrs. Hunnicutt's illness.
