STRADDLING HEAVEN & EARTH

Hugh Phillips has always valued and cherished his family, and he worked hard to support them. As a land surveyor, he always kept both feet planted solidly upon the soil. Hugh Phillips has forever loved flying planes, where he has soared into the heavens high above the land. And with the strength and conviction of his religion, Hugh has always been able to straddle both heaven and earth.
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1929, Hugh relates, "Charles Lindberg has been my hero since I was a boy and I share a birthday with him on February 4." Hugh lived in North Jersey and at the Jersey shore for the majority of his life. He attended Lehigh University. Hugh adds, "I am a retired licensed Land Surveyor from NJ. I worked for the monmouth County Engineering Department as a surveyor prior to my retirement. I laid out highways, subdivisions and municipal complexes, and I supervised the construction of same.
Fifteen years ago and upon his retirement, Hugh and his wife traded the soil of New Jersey for the soil of Vermont. He reveals, "We had been vacationing in southern Vermont since our children were small, since we were small, since we were all skiers. One of my sons went to Sterling College in Craftsbury Common and to Lyndon State. We bought our house in Glover at this time and decided that this was a great place to live compared to suburban NYC area."
Once settled in Glover, Hugh and his wife made the time to become active citizens. Currently, they both serve as NVDA (Northern VT Development Association representatives. Additionally, Hugh volunteers his time as a member of the planning commission, as a zoning board member, and as the town health officer. As an active Eucharist minister for St. Paul's Catholic church in Barton, Hugh shares, "I take communion to the patients at Union House Nursing Home and to shut-ins in Glover, on a weekly basis." For ten years, Hugh had been active in the Barton and Glover ambulance squads. He adds, "Retiring only when I was too old to be insured as a driver."
The only paid position Hugh maintains is that of newport VIT technician. He explains, "I learned about VIT from my son, Jody when he was taking the LPN course from Fanny Allen Hospital. Then a fellow Glover First Aid Squad member, Randy Williams, told me they were looking for Part-time techs." Since Hugh wanted to learn more about computers and programming, he applied for the job. He adds, "It is a perfect outlet for a retired person of my age. I enjoy the work and find the courses interesting. I have learned a tremendous amount about computers and the NET from working at VIT."
Family has always been important to Hugh who has been married for thirty-nine years. He and his wife, Nancy, have three children and three grandchildren. His daughter, Megan lives in Hernando Beach, FL and has two girls, ages 16 and 17. These grandchildren often spend summers with Hugh and Nancy. "My son, Jody lives in Berlin, NH and is a substance abuse counselor at the Jr. and Sr. High schools there," Hugh adds. "My other son, Patrick, lives with his wife Aamanda, in Pittsburg, NH and is a chef at the Eckerd School in Colebrook, NH. Patrick is a Desert Storm veteran and suffers from the Desert Storm Syndrome."
The Ebony, a cocker spaniel. Hugh adds, "We also have four cats of the garden variety, Adolf (who sports a Hitler like mustache), Audubon (a real bird watcher), Harry, and Macavity.
Hugh, an Aquarius, was an instrument rated pilot for many years. He explains, "I no longer fly due to age and health conditions." He is an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict and was stationed at various U.S. bases and in Germany. He states, "I really like to travel and have traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad, both as a civilian and while in the Air Force. Probably my favorite trip has been to Alaska." When asked why his was his favorite trip, Hugh answers, "Because my father was an engineer on the Alaskan highway and I had always wanted to travel there. I was awed by the mountains, vast open spaces and the beauty of the land."
Some of Hugh's other favorites are books and films about history, especially world War I, and classical music and concerts. He names Wagner as his favorite composer and adds, "I really enjoy his operas and also like dixieland Jazz. We always try to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band when it is in Vt."
Revealing a personal non-favorite, with a humorously self-deprecating statement, Hugh says, "I like to eat everything except turnips--as you can gather when you see me on the camera." when asked to describe himself, Hugh candidly says, "As you can see by my picture I am a rather overweight, balding, 69 year-old with a good sense of humor and an Irish temper. I am very close to my faily and have taken time to really enjoy my three grandchildren, especially four year old Jakob, Jody's son."
He might pass on the turnips, those earth-loving root crops, but Hugh Phillips keeps his life plate full and balanced with variety. While he can no longer pilot his plane into the heavens, Hugh manages to bring the Eucharist, with its heavenly promise, to those who are bed-ridden and earthbound. And while he no longer surveys the land in preparation for projects, Hugh's planning commission and zoning board service testifies to his sense of worldy vision. Heaven and earth; Hugh capably straddles both.
