Scholar of Islamic studies and proponent of the Islamic revivalist movement of the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. Born in Jaffa, Palestine (now part of Tel Aviv, Israel), the son of a Qadi (Islamic judge) she was the last governor of the Galilee under the British Mandate of Palestine. A Professor of Islamic Studies at Temple University in Philadelphia from 1969 until his death, he was a proponent of returning to the original ideals of Islam as espoused by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1703-1792) whose work he translated. Along with his wife, Lois he was stabbed to death in his Wyncote, Pa. home by an attacker associated with the Nation of Islam.
