Born Lois Rachel Ibsen in Plentywood, Mont., the daughter of Fred (1877-1958) and Rachel (Flaten) Ibsen (1888-1986), Danish and Norwegian immigrants respectively. She graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in Music and received an M.A. in Music from Perdue University in Indiana, where she met and married fellow graduate student Ismail Al-Faruqi. She was an expert on Islamic Art and musical traditions. Together with her husband, she was stabbed to death in her home in an attack motivated by her husband's activism on behalf of orthodox Islam and the Palestinian cause.
