At an early age Dr. Hayes accepted Christ. He was longtime member of Good Street Baptist Church serving as a Deacon. He was also a member of the Ms. Miller King Bible class.He served in the U. S. Army where he fought in the Korean War.

He is survived by a brother, his wife{since August 27, 1955},a daughter, a son, one grandson, and one great-grandson,also several nieces and nephews.

Dr. Hayes was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Dallas, Texas. He also worked within D.I.S.D. until his retirement in 1999. During these 43 years in D.I.S.D. he worked as:
Classroom teacher @ James Madison High School
Assistant Principal @ Madison
Assistant Principal L. G. Pinkston High School
Principal Roosevelt High School
Assistant Superintendent East Oak Cliff Sub–District
Sub District Administrator-Sub-District II
Administrator-Magnet/Alternative Schools Executive Director, Magnet/Alternative Schools, Secondary Education Department Area Director-Magnet/Alternative School
Assistant Superintendent-Cluster 6,
District 9 Superintendent

Preceding in death are parents Henry and Bessie Hayes and sister, Teresa Hayes.
