Green-Wood Cemetery
Section 203, Joined Lots 26728 (left), and 26730 (right).
These lots were purchased at the same time, suggesting a family connection between the purchasers. Furthermore, both lots hold the remains of persons with the surnames BELL and WEST. Lot 26728, on the left, is completely without memorial stones. Lot 26730, on the right, is marked by only 3 stones. Only about a third of those resting in these lots are memorialized by name. More confusing, four people memorialized on stone #1 below are actually buried in unmarked graves about half a mile away in section 32, lot 10163.

[At the bottom of the stone are 3 lines of illegible text, but the name Martha West can be discerned. The problem with this stone is that of the 5 legible names inscribed on it, only Martha Kirk West rests here. The other 4 are buried in section 32, lot 10163, according to cemetery records. Perhaps that is what the 3 lines of eroded text at the bottom of the stone once explained It appears that this stone was removed from lot 10163 and reset here—but 4 of those it memorializes still rest in 10163.]

[NOTE: Burial cards for these 3 individuals note that they were all moved to this lot from graves in Stonington, CT and reburied here Oct 16 1889, and that all had died “over 30 years ago.” With that in mind, the following identities are suggested:
“Papa” was Bartholomew West (1816-1858);
“Johnnie” was John West, who died before 1859 aged 86 and was the father of “Papa” Bartholomew; and
“Willie” was William West (1847-1852); presumably a son of “Papa” Bartholomew.]
