Gary the son of Jack A. Foster and Zelma Foster of Boise Idaho enlisted in the US Marine Corps on June 2 1964 in Boise ID. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company B, 1st Anti Tank Battalion, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of June, the Battalion was deployed in Quang Tin and Quang Ngai Provinces with Company B in support of the Chu Lai Defense Command. On June 4, an accidental discharge of a 106mm recoilless rifle mounted on an Ontos occurred killing three and wounding four Marines. Cpl Foster was one of the casualties he was killed by multiple fragmentation wounds.
