Jerry the son of Ernest Estes and Bertha M. Estes of Boise Idaho enlisted in the US Marine Corps on January 28 1963 in Boise ID. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company C. 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of February the Battalion was conducting it assigned mission southwest of the Da Nang Military Complex in Hoa Vang and Dien Ban Districts of Quang Nam Province. On February 6, a squad enroute to their preplanned ambush site tripped a booby trap causing two explosions south of the Ap Thach Nhon village complex. The explosions wounded four Marines and LCpl Jerry Estes died from multiple shrapnel wounds before he could be evacuated.
