BOY, 18, DROWNED WHILE SKATING
Goes Through Thin Ice In Black Creek.
CARLTON WASHBURN LOSES LIFE
Philadelphia, Jan. 6 — Carlton Washburn, 18, was drowned in Black Creek near Indian River, yesterday afternoon when he fell through thin ice while skating. His body was recovered by his brother, Edward, this morning at 8:45. It was found in ten feet of water in the rear of the Fred Hart home. The ice, an inch thick had been broken through in but one spot.
Carlton asked his mother for his brother’s shoes to put skates on yesterday afternoon. His mother, fearing that the ice was too thin for safety, asked him not to go. He went out, however, and failed to return for supper. An all night search by members of the family and neighbors failed to locate him. The search continued this morning when hay hooks attached to a pole were dragged along the creek bottom.
Carlton was born Dec. 14, 1909 in Philadelphia, the son of Frank and Minnie Washburn. His father died ten years ago. His entire life had been spent in this village. Surviving are his mother, and the following brothers and sisters, Leon, Leslie, Edward, Donald, Mary and Dora of Philadelphia, Russell and Jessie of Carthage, Henry of Lock Haven, Pa., and William of Oneida. The body was taken to a local undertaking establishment where it will be held pending arrival of representatives of the district attorney.
