Rhetta J. Hoy Sivils, 51, of White Hall, formerly of Ashley County, died Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at her residence. Born July 2, 1954, in Lake Village to Noble M. Hoy Sr. and Vivian Louise Akridge Hoy, she was raised in Parkdale and received her early education in Parkdale and Wilmot, graduating from Wilmot High School. She received a BS degree in education from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1977, a master's degree in elementary education and her principal's certification in 1988 from Delta State University in Cleveland, MS, and a specialist degree in administration from Delta State in 1990. She worked for Parkdale Elementary School, where she taught kindergarten and served as coordinator for the Head Start program in Parkdale until 1981. She taught second grade at A. W. James Elementary School in Drew, MS, until 1982. She taught kindergarten at Delta State University until 1985, when she went to Cypress Park Elementary School in Cleveland to teach second grade, sixth grade, and was the assistant principal there from 1988-91. She was principal at Central Lower Elementary in Lake Village from 1991 until her retirement in 1993. She started teaching second grade again at Redfield Elementary prior to her illness.

She was a member of Family Church in Pine Bluff and had served as volunteer youth director at Wilmot United Methodist Church. She was also the church organist for many years at Parkdale United Methodist Church. She was active and involved in many activities including the Mississippi Professional Educators, International Reading Association, Mississippi Reading Association, Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, Phi Delta Kappa, Delta State University Alumni, Stennis Institute of Government member and participant, Cleveland Business and Professional Women, Elementary Principal's Association, Delta Area Writing Project, Mississippi Association of Children under Six (MACUS), past United Way School coordinator for Bolivar County and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she had served as chapter regent, past vice regent, past program chairman, national and district page, Outstanding Junior Member of Mississippi, state chairman, registrar and Good Citizen chairman.


Survivors include one son, Zackery Hoy Sivils of White Hall; her parents, Noble and Vivian Hoy of White Hall; one brother, Noble M. Hoy Jr. and wife Cindy of Pine Bluff; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Gunter and husband Hal of Pine Bluff; two nephews, Nicholas Hoy and Brandon Rushing, both of Pine Bluff; her mother-in-law, Geraldine Crossley of Wilmot; and a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Terry Lynn Sivils.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 17, at 10 a.m. at Family Church with Revs. Bill Fitzhugh, Fred Arnold and Bob Bridges officiating. Burial was at 2 p.m. at the Parkdale Cemetery.
