Joseph Abraham Balinky was born in Glukhov, Chernigov, Russian Empire (now Ukraine). He emigrated in April 1891 with his son Abraham as Jos Balinkin on the ship Dania. He was married to Miriam Rose Shamis om 19 February 1869, they had five children Breina (Bertha), Abraham, Pesach (Louis), Harry (Gerson) and Freidekl (Fannie). He established J. A. Balinky & Son a pharmacy in Bayonne, New Jersey with his son Harry.
