Mary Lou Gaughan, 89, of Baden, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 9, 2014, in Westmoreland Hospital.

She was born Sept. 2, 1924 in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late John F. and Mary A. Gaughan.

Mary Lou was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Baden, where she also served as the CCD Coordinator and Music Minister from 1964 to 1989.

She graduated from Mt. Gallitzen High School and received a Bachelors of Science and a Masters in Music Education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

Mary Lou did additional graduate study in reading at Duquesne University and earned PA Certification as a Reading Specialist and Reading Supervisor. In addition, she studied Gregorian Chant at Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in Purchase, New York. From 1945 to 1968, she taught and supervised music in various non-public schools and was the Director of Music Honors Program for fifty high schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. From 1969 to 1992, she worked as a reading specialist in the Ambridge Area School District and was the Title 1 Auditor for the PA Dept. of Education. From 1993 to 1997, she was the Title 1 Coordinator for the Ambridge Area School District. In addition, she was a member of the Writing Committee, the Elementary Curriculum Committee and the District Wide Curriculum Committee of the Ambridge Area School District.

Mary Lou was a member and served as the recording secretary and the president of the Leotta C. Hawthorne Reading Council of Beaver County. She was also a member of the Keystone State Reading Association, the International Reading Association, and the Title 1 Coordinators Association of PA. She served on the School Curriculum Advisory Committee at WQED Television Station and the Graduate Education Advisory Committee at Duquesne University.

As a lifelong educator, Mary Lou found joy in sharing her knowledge with all those around her and used her resources to help others achieve their goals.

She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia A. and Charles C. Fawcett III, and the following nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great nieces: Charles C. Fawcett IV (Susan) and their children, Collin, Maura, Casey, and Tara; Mary Matthews (George IV) and their children, George V., Elizabeth, Geoffrey and Barbara; John G. Fawcett (Jacqueline) and their children, Megan, and Joshua; Sylvia McGaughey (Kent) and their children, Margaret and Kelsey and James P. Fawcett (Tricia) and their children, Caroline, Julia, James and Anna.

Friends will be received Monday from 1 to 3 and 5 to 8 p.m. in the BOHN-MATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 1099 Maplewood Ave., Ambridge, where service will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Baden.

Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Leetonia, OH.
