Charles Hartwig, son of Peter Hartwig and Anna Rochel was born March 29, 1870 at Hamburg, Germany. He was baptised and confirmed into the Lutheran faith in Germany. After he finished his formal education he worked as an apprentice in a commission house in Germany.
In 1887 at the age of 17 years he came to America and made his home with an uncle at Durran, Iowa. He clerked in a store at Gladbrook, Iowa until his marriage.
On December 21, 1892, he was united in marriage to Margaret St. John. Until 1900 they farmed near Gladbrook, Iowa. In that year they moved to O'Brien County and farmed near Primghar until 1910.
In that same year they, Mr. and Mrs. Hartwig and their two daughters Anna and Lavera visited Germany. After their return from Germany they lived in Primghar and Mr. Hartwig was employed as a painter.
In 1942 Mr. and Mrs. Hartwig celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. For the last few years Charles Hartwig has been in poor health. And the last few months he was confined to his bed. He was lovingly cared for by his wife.
On February 18, 1950, he was called to his eternal rest, at the age of 79 years, and 10 months and 20 days.
He leaves to mourn: his wife, Margaret Hartwig; two daughters, Anna Byers of Primghar, and Lavera Henderson of Des Moines, Iowa; two brothers, Ferdinand Hartwig of Walnut Grove, Minn., and Paul Hartwig, of Berlin, Germany; seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends.
There was a prayer service at the home and a memorial service at the Seivert Funeral Home.
Interment was at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery of Primghar. Pastor Siegfried Dietrich of Calumet officiated.
Pallbearers were: Fred Schuster, Gus Nothdorf, Jess Byers, Dick Nagle, George Halstrom, and George Mast. "Abide With Me" and "Rock of Ages" were sung by recording
