Enlisted at Lincoln, Maine July 10, 1862 at age 20 as a Sergeant into Co A 18th Maine Infantry Regiment.Transferred Dec 19, 1862 out, and into Co A 1st Maine heavy Artillery. Promoted 2nd Lieutenant Jan 1, 1864. Wounded May 19, 1864 at battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA. He received the Medal Of Honor for meritorious service at battle of Boydton Plank Road, VA Oct 27, 1864. Promoted 1st Lieutenant Dec 13, 1864 and transferred to Co M. Promoted Captain Aug 15, 1865 and transferred to Co E and also Adjutant until muster out Sept 1, 1865.
