George Thomas (Tom) Whitehurst Mr. George Thomas "Tom" Whitehurst, 79, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2008. The funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday at 1:30 in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park. Mr. Whitehurst, son of the late Elmer and Effie Williams Whitehurst, was a graduate of Bethel High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War. Following the service he began a long career in food service where he partnered in several fast-food restaurants including H&W Sandwich King and West-End Drive In. In 1968 he and his wife, Janice, opened Tom's Restaurant and they operated their family establishment for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1998. He was a member of the Pitt Golden K Kiwanis Club, American Legion Post No. 39 and St. James United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janice Albritton Whitehurst; son, Marc Whitehurst of Raleigh; daughter, Jill W. Tucker and husband, Fred, of Richmond Hill, Ga.; grandchild, Robert Fred Tucker III, of Richmond Hill, Ga.; sisters, Frances Hardy, of Bethel and Dorothy Manning of Williamston; The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times at their home.
