Organist and choir master for 25 years at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco. After retirement he was given the title of Organist and Choir Director Emeritus. He began playing piano at age 6 and 3 years later took up the organ and trained under Wallace Sabin, who was a founder of the San Francisco Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO). He went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and later won fellowships in Europe and England. During World War II he served as a bandmaster for the 28th Infantry Division until he became a prisoner of war during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Richard became organist and choirmaster at St. Mark's Lutheran in San Francisco and came to Grace Cathedral in 1947 and established the Christmas Vesper Concert which continues to be a strong tradition in the city. IN 1957 he and C. Julian Bartlett, dean of the cathedral, founded Cathedral School for Boys. A truly fabulous, highly talented organist, whose works are too infrequently heard or known of. There is a wonderful biography out on him.
