FOUNDER OF CANADIAN RAILWAYS

The funeral took place on Saturday at Brentwood of Mr. Robert Montgomery Horne-Payne, of Merry Meade, Shenfield, whose death occurred suddenly last week.

Mr. R. M. Horne-Payne was formerly chairman of the Canadian Northern Railway, and he was the founder of the British Columbia Electric Railway, and for many years chairman of that Company. For over thirty years he had been associated with the direction and control of Canadian enterprises, and was very well known in the Dominion and in London. Mr. Horne-Payne had resided at Brentwood for some years, and was interested in Essex concerns, being a keen sportsman.

The funeral service was held at the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Brentwood, and was attended by many representatives of business and associated concerns. The service was conducted by the Rev. Canon T. F. Norris and the Rev. M. Wilson. The body had been placed in the church on the previous evening, when there was a reception service, at which Mrs. Horne-Payne, members of the family, and the staff were present. Earlier in the day Mass was celebrated. The interment was made in the churchyard.

The family mourners were: Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Horne-Payne, son and daughter-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Robson, brother-in-law and sister-in-law; Mrs. Eagle Bott, sister-in-law; the Misses Eagle Bott, nieces; Mrs. Falcon Steward, niece; and Miss Matthews.
