She lived a rather interesting life devoted to family.
Gertrude gave birth to the first of possibly 26 children when she was 18. On her son's birth record it states the name of the father but lists the child as illegitimate. There are no records to suggest she was married to the boy's father. The child would be raised by his grandmother.
Married first at the age of 24 to a 60-year-old man, she was divorced the same day after it was discovered the man was still married to his first wife who lived not far away. He went back to his first wife and died less than 4 years later.
Upon returning to her family, she again gave birth to an illegitimate child whose father Ruben Wells, she later married. Sadly the family lost two sons in infancy.
Ruben died fifteen years after they were married and it was then said by my family that Gertrude was married to several other men with whom she had many children.
Her last husband was Stanley Cole whom she married
a few years before her death. She is buried with him.
My grandmother and several other remember Gertrude. They recall that she was married seven or eight times and outlived all her husbands. I have been able to associate three marriages (one divorce) and one partnership with Gertrude. Most of her later marriages took place when records were sealed.
The family rumor goes that Gertrude had twenty-six children including six sets of twins. Several of these children died young and were illegitimate. Three children were killed in WW2. I have eleven names for children.
No one can remember all of the children's names but there is a possibility that several of the men she married or lived with, had children of there own and these may have helped make up with the twenty-six children.
