GOLD CITY DRUMMER DIES
The drummer for the gospel group Gold City died Tuesday morning in a one-car wreck in Gadsden. Douglas "Doug" William Riley, 35, Glencoe, was driving a 2003 Land Rover Discovery that wrecked at 12:42 a.m. on Goodyear Avenue at the intersection of Hoke Street, according to a Gadsden police report.Riley was traveling on Goodyear Avenue toward Hokes Bluff. The police report stated the SUV left the roadway, came back onto it and crossed over the oncoming lane of traffic before hitting a power pole on that side of
the road and flipping on its side. "It is our understanding he wasn't wearing a seat belt," Capt. Jeff Wright said.
He said tire tracks were found off the side of Goodyear Avenue where Riley was traveling away from Gadsden, indicating the Land Rover leaving the roadway may
have caused Riley to lose control of the SUV.
It is possible the SUV had a tire blowout, Wright said.
Along with there being no seat belt in use, the police report noted there was no air bag deployment and that Riley was partially ejected from the SUV. Etowah County Coroner Jason R. Maise said he pronounced Riley dead at 1:25 a.m.Gadsden police continued to investigate the accident Tuesday afternoon.Information posted on Gold City's Web site stated Riley was on the way to the group's recording studio when the accident happened. That information was attributed to Jonathan Wilburn, the group's lead singer.
Riley began traveling with Gold City in the summer of 1989, after his high school graduation from Glencoe Christian Academy. He planned to attend Gadsden State Community College that fall, but accepted a full-time job playing with the group. Along with being the group's drummer for 16 years, Riley produced and wrote numerous songs for Gold City. Among those are "Are You Ready?" which was nominated for Favorite Song of the Year in 2000, and "Mercy Rescues Me," which reached No. 5 on the Singing News Top 80 Chart.Riley's father, Tim Riley, is the retired bass singer and owner of the group.Gold City has enjoyed more than 60 Singing News Fan Awards, including Albums of the Year, Songs of the Year, Groups of the Year, and Individuals of the Year awards. The group has had multiple Dove Award nominations and was recognized with a Dove award for Southern Gospel Song of the Year in 1993 for "There Rose a Lamb." The group has been a member of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame since 1992.
