Son of Ralph Charles Sandborn, of Minnesota, and Lois Charlotte Blazer, of Idaho. Ralph grew up in Healdsburg, California. He attended Healdsburg Elementary School and High School. He went on to play college baseball at San Jose State. He was a Navy Veteran, serving in the Seabees, U.S. Navy Construction Battallalion, during World War II. He married Constance Oehlmann, becoming the son-in-law of Rudolph & Maude Oehlmann, who owned and operated Manzana Products Co., Inc., in Sebastopol, California. There Ralph joined the family business, managing production at Manzana for more than 40 years. He was active in community affairs, serving as the Fire Chief of the Graton Fire Department, volunteering on the Oak Grove School District Board, and serving on the Board of the Willowside Water District.
