Husband of Maggie Shealy Dowd, father of Lila Dowd Powell, grandfather of Dianne Powell Hare, great grandfather of Kimberly Hare Beeson, great great grandfather of Lydia and Addisyn Fee.

His 1953 newspaper obituary read as follows:

J.M. Dowd, 81, Farmer of Near Batesburg

James Milton Dowd, Sr., 81, farmer, died Monday at his home near Batesburg after a long illness.
Mr. Dowd was born near Chapin, son of the late Milton and Katie Reeves Dowd of Chapin. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Mr. Dowd was twice married, first to the late Miss Maggie Shealy of Chapin. Survivors from this marriage include four sons, George Herman Dowd of Johnston, James Edgar Dowd of Augusta, Ga., Jacob Shealy Dowd of Sumter, and J.M. Dowd, Jr., of Campobello, and three daughters, Mrs. Lucy Alice Brown of Augusta, Ga., Mrs. Lila Eva Powell of Johnston, and Mrs. Statia Louise Michelson of Charlotte, N.C.
Other survivors include Mr. Dowd's second wife, Mrs. Corrie Warren Dowd and one son, Milton Dowd, both of the home.
The body will be at the home until 1:15 p.m. this afternoon at which time the funeral procession will leave for Little Mountain where the funeral wil be conducted at 2:30 p.m. from the Mt. Tabor Lutheran church by the Rev. Mr. Wessinger of Little Mountain and the Rev. Otis Sturkie of West Columbia. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Bud Meyers, Mack Bedenbaugh, Bazzie Temples, Bobbie Trotter, Alvin Matthews, and O.F. Lorick.
