Sam died at Duke Hospital.
He was the son of Samuel and Lottie Puryear and was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy, Chatham, Virginia and attended the University of Richmond.
Sam served a tour of duty in Korea and returned to marry his sweetheart, Doris Jones on February 22, 1955. Sam and Doris moved to Richmond Virginia where he began what would be a 30 year career in the automobile business. In 1978, Sam and his family moved to Danville Virginia where he owned and operated, along with his son, Richard, Danville Volkswagen-Mazda until his retirement in 1987. Upon retirement, he served as an assistant chaplain in the Good News Prison Ministry in Danville, Virginia until 1997. Sam and Doris moved to Raleigh North Carolina in 1998.
Sam was a man of tremendous faith and his life was a living witness of his walk with the Lord. In his lifetime, he served as a Sunday school teacher, an active member of the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship, and as an advisory board member and President of the Salvation Army board of Danville, Virginia. He was part of the original Board of Directors for Little Life pregnancy support ministry in Danville and co-chaired along with his son Richard, the first Little Life Golf Tournament fundraiser which is now an annual event. After moving to Raleigh, Sam was a founding member and elder at Life Pointe Christian Church.
Sam was a lifelong avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed watching ACC sporting events and Nascar racing. He was excellent golfer and greatly enjoyed the time he spent playing with the senior group at Wildwood Green.
Sam is survived by his wife, Doris Jones Puryear; their three children , son Richard and his wife, Ronda of Stanardsville, VA; daughter, Kelly Downing and her husband, Rob of Hillsborough; daughter, Beth Ohmann and fiance Bob Kent of Raleigh. "Papa Sam" is also survived by six grandchildren, Angie and Kate Puryear, Laura, Sam and Emma Downing and Drew Ohmann.
Sam was predeceased by his parents, Sam and Lottie, and his brother, Dean Puryear.
