Obituary
Brad Crawford Woodard, 51, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Hayesville, died Wednesday, July 2, 2014. He was a native of Clay County.
He was a 1984 graduate from the University of Georgia with a BA degree in Journalism and a minor in Russian.
He had served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force in Jet pilot training.
Brad was an award winning journalist with extensive background in anchoring, producing and reporting on location as well as broadcast scriptwriting. He had worked at WSAV-TV (NBC), Savannah, GA, WTVF-TV (CBS), Nashville, TN, KARE-TV (NBC), Minneapolis, MN, and most recently, KHOU-TV (CBS), Houston, TX.
Brad's accomplishments include 26 time Emmy Winner, seven National Genesis Awards, three National Press Club Awards, Sigma Delta Chi Award, New York Festivals World Medal, National Edward R. Murrow Award, Numerous Regional Awards, Worldfest - Houston Gold Medal Award, and National Epilepsy Foundation Distinguished Journalism Award.
Brad was a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a niece, Sarah-Faith Spach.
Surviving are his parents, Donald and Nell Crawford Woodard of Hayesville; two sisters, Donna Trull and husband, Scot of Hayesville and Christy Spach and husband, Chris of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; four nieces, a nephew, and a great niece.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 9, 2014 in the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church with the Revs. Chad Chandler and Lewis Walker officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Stan Woodard, Jim Milton, Gregg Hamilton, Jason Whitely, Kevin Reece, and Tom Empey. Jake Empey served as honorary pallbearer.
The family received friends from 6-8 Tuesday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville where the body was until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Brad Crawford Woodard to the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Building Fund, 50 Marvin Cabe Lane, Hayesville, NC 28904 or the Humane Society of the United States at humanesociety.org/donate.
Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville in charge of all arrangements.
