John R. Hurff, Sr. age 98, of Barnsboro passed away peacefully on Friday May 10, 2013 at home on his farm. Son of the late Howard Hurff and Rebecca Hurff (Schoch) and brother of the late Edward and Howard Hurff Jr. John was born January 24, 1915 in Barnsboro. After attending Barnsboro School he worked for Dembro Brothers, a world renown Poultry breeding farm, where he was the breeding flock manager for many years. In 1955 he established Hurff's Poultry Farm, providing farm fresh eggs for customers near and far. In 1965 he opened Lake Hurff serving the community with summer activities until 2006. In 1980, John and his wife Lillian retired, enjoying life by spending time in Florida, the New Jersey shore and time with their family. John was a former member of the Gloucester County Board of Agriculture and a life long member of the Hurff Family Association where he won many awards. In younger years he also played baseball for the Sewell AA. He and his wife attended the 100th Celebration of the Hurff Family reunion. John was predeceased by his wife of 78 years Adalina "Lillian" Hurff (nee DeEugenio) who died in July of 2012. Survived by two sons John R. Hurff, Jr. and his wife Nancy, Joseph Robert Hurff, Sr. and his wife Irene, 5 grandchildren Stephen (Amy), Scott (Susan), Paul (Lorraine), Joseph R. "Robby" (Dale) Hurff, Jr., Rebecca Hurff Greenwood, 20 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, and one brother-in-law Lewis DeEugenio and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Heartland Hospice for the wonderful care and attention he received from them. Relatives and friends may visit with the family 9 to 11 AM Tuesday, May 14th at SMITH FUNERAL HOME 47 Main St., Mantua, NJ where funeral services will be held at 11 AM. Interment will be in Manahath Cemetery, Glassboro, NJ. Contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 800 Jessup Rd., Sherwood Professional Bldg. Suite 808, Thorofare, NJ 08086 in his memory.
