From the period of about 1914-1920 David served for the British Army as a member of the 16th Irish Fusileers during WWI. he fought at Vimy Ridge, and other places before being wounded in the back.
After the war, On March 20, 1926 he left Greenock, Scotland aboard the ship "Montrose" and set sail for Canada. he arrived on March 28, 1926 at St. John New Brunswick. He headed for Swift Current, Saskatchewan where his brothers Patrick and Barney had made their homes. In 1933 he married Eva Catherine Thwaites in Swift Current. They were blessed with four children; Alice, Eva, Patricia "Pat", and Thomas F. Starrs. Eventually the family would relocate to Richmond, B.C.
